San Jose Crash Critically Injuries Pedestrian
posted:: Thursday May 26, 2011

A San Jose man is in critical condition after an accident yesterday morning, May 25, 2011, on Monterey Road. The 40-year-old pedestrian was hit by a San Jose woman who was driving a 2006 Ford Focus.

The victim is being treated at Regional Medical Center for his serious injuries.

As reported in the Mercury News, police questioned the 40-year-old woman who was driving the car, but she was not arrested. Officer Jose Garcia stated that the investigation is continuing.

The southbound lanes of Monterey Road at Southside Drive were closed by police a little after the accident occurred, about 8:00 a.m., and reopened around 10:20 a.m.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be causes of the accident, and the investigation is continuing, according to police.

AA-Accident Attorneys Offers Driving Safety Tips
On Hazardous Wet Roads

San Jose, CA – Californians are driving in some incredibly wet conditions this winter, and AA-Accident Attorneys knows that makes for risky situations. To help drivers learn in advance how to handle hazardous events, such as skidding and hydroplaning, they offer a recent safety article on their website. The accident lawyer San Jose team realizes that most drivers aren't regularly trained on what to do in emergencies, and when fear kicks in, often drivers make their hazardous situations worse by doing the wrong thing. AA-Accident attorneys hopes practical advice, like which direction to steer the front of your car in a skid, or how to use your brakes or gas pedal, will help drivers feel more confidence that can assist them in those situations.

The accident lawyer San Jose team wants every driver to have the informational tools that will help him or her remain calm in an emergency. While not all accidents can be avoided, some situations can be affected by how a driver responds. Every driver knows how to steer, brake, and go, and while it might feel like second nature to us now, everyone had to learn these skills, at some point, for the first time. AA-Accident Attorneys hopes that some extra reminders, that can be read in their articles, will help drivers learn hazardous situation safety tips so that this knowledge, too, is almost second nature, easily recalled when the need arises.

The accident lawyer San Jose team wants all motorists to be safe, but when an accident or injury occurs, they work hard to help their clients collect the compensation they are due. For over twenty years, AA-Accident attorneys has expertly served people seeking assistance for their injuries.

BAD WEATHER DRIVING TIPS

Sloshy Roads and Sliding Cars: Keeping Safe When You're Drenched

Water is a terrific lubricant. A little water flowing on a long plastic sheet is the concept for a children's toy in which kids run and slide down its surface. If you gathered with friends and tried it as a youngster, you might remember that sometimes you went forward on your feet, sometimes on your back, sometimes on your belly. You didn't always know where you'd end up, and you couldn't really control how much you were slipping. Sliding down a plastic tarp when you're a kid is fun. Sliding down an asphalt road in your car when you're an adult behind the wheel is frightening.

Chances are you've experienced driving when the road is wet. Depending on the amount of rainfall, and the intensity of rainfall in a short interval, roads can become drenched. Standing water can collect on the surface, and if you add speed from your moving vehicle, you have the components of a dangerous slipping and sliding ride that's not child's play. When water builds up faster than your car can move it out of the way, you can lose contact with the road. Once you lose traction, you can begin hydroplaning—and there is nothing fun about that.

Here are some things you can do to drive more safely in very wet weather:

Go slow. This one is obvious. If you are traveling more slowly, you give your tires better opportunities for traction, and for keeping in contact with the road.

Easy on the brakes. If you're driving more slowly, giving yourself extra time to stop, you will reduce chances that you have to slam on the brakes. When the road is very wet, you don't want to get into a situation where you have to brake hard. This could lock your wheels and you are off skidding away. Use gentle pressure when braking.

Breathe if you skid. One of the hardest things to do when we're scared is to remain calm. A lot of people hold their breath when afraid, but if you can remember to breathe in and out, this will help you react more calmly and rationally. While you are skidding, don't turn suddenly, or stomp on the brake. Breathe, lift your foot off the gas pedal, and steer toward the direction you want the front of your car to be. If you don't have anti-lock brakes, try not to use your brakes while you are skidding. If you have anti-lock brakes, step on the brake pedal with steady pressure while you steer. In situations where you're hydroplaning but haven't started skidding yet and your car is still going in the right direction, ease up on the gas to slow your car until you feel the road. Don't slam on your brakes or you could cause yourself to skid. And breathe.

An ounce of prevention. That old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is a good one to remember for driving your car in general. Specifically for wet weather driving, you can reduce hydroplaning and skidding by maintaining your tires in the proper condition. This means correct inflation and good tire tread. Driving with bald tires is a bad risk.

Driving in wet weather is not a kids' play date on the lawn. You want to be prepared if you face a hazardous situation while you're on the road. Though not often acknowledged, getting home safely is a thrill.

When the Rain Doesn't Drain: Keep from Skidding on Sloppy Streets

If you have ever gone ice-skating, you know what gliding feels like under your feet. The pressure that your ice skate blade makes on the ice causes the surface of the ice to melt, and that water lubricates your movement. The layer of water under you feet removes traction, and you go slip sliding away. That's your intention when you put on a pair of ice skates. That's not your intention when you are driving your car.

In wet and rainy conditions, water can build up in front of your car's tires. If this happens faster than your car can move it out of the way, you might feel that you have lost contact with the road. Water pressure lifts your car, and much like ice-skating, the layer of water between your tires and the pavement allows your car to slip and slide. This is also known as hydroplaning, and it is just plain scary.

Here are some things you can do to drive more safely in very wet weather:

Go slow. This one is obvious. If you are traveling more slowly, you give your tires better opportunities for traction, and for keeping in contact with the road.

• Easy on the brakes. If you're driving more slowly, giving yourself extra time to stop, you will reduce chances that you have to slam on the brakes. In situations where you're hydroplaning but haven't started skidding yet and your car is still going in the right direction down the road, ease up on the gas to slow your car until you feel the road.

With a few things to keep in mind before a hazardous driving situation arises, you can be better prepared in the event you do face an issue. Don't be in a rush when the weather is bad. The rain falling may slow things down on the roads, but you don't want to end up crying from hasty choices.
