One of the Most Dangerous Places to Walk in the U.S. is the Inland Empire
posted:: Tuesday May 24, 2011

This is not welcome news for the Inland Empire. Pedestrians in the metropolitan area that covers Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ontario face one of the most dangerous places in the U.S. to walk.

The report, which came out Tuesday, May 24, 2011, prepared by Transportation for America and called "Dangerous by Design," reveals that between 2000 and 2009, 938 people walking on the streets of the Inland Empire were killed.

Each large metropolitan area was rated with a pedestrian danger index—a formula researchers used that compared the rate of pedestrian deaths to the amount people walked in that area.

The pedestrian danger index for California as a whole was 71, which ranked it 16th in the nation. The state had 6,957 pedestrian deaths between 2000 and 2009.

Even though the metro area that covers Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Santa Ana had pedestrian deaths that were more than double the Inland Empire's, the Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario area received a pedestrian danger index of 139.2. This ranked that metro area fifth in the nation—only four areas in Florida were worse.

The reason the Inland Empire received such a high ranking is because the area has low walking rates combined with high numbers of pedestrian deaths. The report stated, "People who walk in these areas have the highest chance of being killed while walking. These areas are dominated by lower density and automobile-oriented development patterns that rarely account for the safety of pedestrians."

Design changes could improve safety for pedestrians in the metro area. In the meantime, if you are out walking in the Inland Empire, use caution. It may be that cars can't see you, so look out for them.

STOPPING WHEN YOUR BRAKES WON'T

You're driving along, you step on the brakes, and nothing happens. You don't stop; you don't even slow down. You realize your brakes have failed. At this point, you might begin to panic, but if you have some knowledge about this kind of thing, you can help your situation.

Here are some tips if your brakes fail:

• For automatic transmissions: use the emergency brake and shift to a lower gear.

• For manual transmissions: shift to a lower gear, release the clutch, and use the emergency brake.

• Using these safety actions can damage your emergency brake and your transmission, but you want to keep yourself from getting into an accident and hurting yourself and others. Better to stop with mechanical damage than to strike someone or something and have property damage and bodily harm.

Here are a few more brake tips:

• In wet weather, it might seem like your brakes are feeling strange. If your brakes feel wet, drive your car a little ways and then step lightly on the brake pedal. The heat and friction caused by the operating parts of your brakes will help dry them.

• Also remember to use your gears when traveling down a steep grade rather than riding your brakes all the way to the bottom. Use a lower gear to slow your speed, and shift into lower gear before you start going down a hill or incline.

Don't forget maintenance:

• Have your brakes checked by a mechanic. He or she will be able to tell you what condition your brakes are in. Problems with brakes can include the brake drum and the brake linings. Have a professional check these.

• If you hear clicking or squealing when you brake, you have a problem that needs to be checked.

• If your brakes feel soft or mushy, have your brakes checked.

• If your car pulls to the left or the right, your alignment may be off which will affect the wear on your brakes. Have this checked by your mechanic.

It's better to plan ahead and have regular maintenance done on your car to avoid breakdowns. But even with proper care, a surprise can happen. Having safety knowledge that you can use may help you keep that surprise from becoming an accident or catastrophe.

DRIVING NIGHTMARE—YOUR BRAKES FAIL WHAT DO YOU DO?

Reading a news story online, or watching an accident report on television often makes us think, "what would I do if that happened to me?" It's not unusual for accidents to happen, and it's not unusual to imagine what any of us would do in a similar situation. Not every car accident can be avoided, but a driver using safety knowledge and skills can lessen the potential severity of some accidents. For instance, do you know what to do if your brakes fail while you're driving?

On the spur of the moment, when you're in a hazardous situation, it can be difficult to think. But if you have some knowledge beforehand, you can use it quickly.

Better to stop with mechanical damage, than to strike someone or something and have property damage and bodily harm.

In wet weather, it might seem like your brakes are feeling strange. If your brakes feel wet, drive your car a little ways and then step lightly on the brake pedal. The heat and friction caused by the operating parts of your brakes will help dry them.

Also remember to use your gears when traveling down a steep grade rather than riding your brakes all the way to the bottom. Use a lower gear to slow your speed, and shift into lower gear before you start going down a hill or incline.

Store driving safety tips in your memory so you have some ideas on how to help your situation when you're in an emergency. And don't forget proper automobile maintenance. It's important to know what to do if your brakes fail, but even better not to have them break down. Have your brakes checked by a mechanic. Stay safe.

Does a Cancer-Causing Chemical in Drinking Water Make You Want to Gag or Gulp?

This month major news organizations carried an alarming story: The drinking water in 31 cities in the U.S. contains hexavalent chromium. The hazards of this industrial, and cancer-causing, chemical gained widespread public attention through the movie "Erin Brockovich." Though Pacific Gas & Electric paid $333 million to settle claims of more than 600 people from the town of Hinkley, California who were exposed to the chemical in their drinking water, a decade and a half later the issue of health risks from exposure to hexavalent chromium appears more widespread.

A national survey by the Environmental Working Group found concentrations of hexavalent chromium in drinking water were highest in Norman, Oklahoma, Honolulu, Hawai'i, and Riverside, California. 35 cities in the survey had three times as much hexavalent chromium in drinking water as the ideal standard, or public health goal, that is being considered by California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

The survey by the Environmental Working Group reveals the problem of contaminated drinking water may be found in more locales than originally thought. While the concentration levels of hexavalent chromium found in drinking water may be lower in some places, health problems can come from chronic exposure.

Hexavalent chromium was a widely used industrial chemical, but groundwater contamination can also come from natural sources such as leaching from ores. The Environmental Protection Agency currently does not have a limit set for hexavalent chromium in drinking water. Though a limit would help protect public health, there is resistance from some water utilities across the U.S. Cleaning up hexavalent chromium will be expensive, but at the end of the day—and at the bottom of that next glass of water—is the health of real people. Limits set for this cancer-causing chemical will make it safer to drink up.
