Three-Vehicle Orange County Crash on 22 Freeway Injuries Family of 5
posted:: Friday July 1, 2011
Five family members were injured in a three-vehicle crash that blocked lanes of the eastbound 22 Freeway yesterday morning, June 30, 2011. As reported in the Orange County Register, California Highway Patrol stated the accident occurred around 9:21 a.m., a little east of Fairview Street. According to witnesses, four vehicles were involved in the crash.
One of the victims, a nine-month-old boy, was among those injured.
CHP officer J.C. Bramlett explained in the Register's news story that a Pacific Seafood box truck could not stop in time when traffic started to slow, and crashed into a Cadillac CTS. The force of the collision shoved the Cadillac into a Dodge Caravan.
Neither the driver of the box truck, nor the driver of the van was injured. The five family members who were traveling in the Cadillac had minor injuries. The mother was injured, as were her four children—three daughters aged 13, 10, and 6, and her son, aged nine months.

Early Morning Crash in Irvine near Shady Canyon Kills Young Woman
posted:: Wednesday June 22, 2011
Early this morning, June 22, 2011, a single vehicle crash killed a 21-year-old woman from Irvine, and injured an 18-year-old woman who was also in the car.
The car crash, which happened only a few yards from the entrance of the gated community of Shady Canyon, happened near Shady Canyon Drive and Sunnyhill Drive. According to investigators, as reported in The Los Angeles Times, it looked like the car had swerved through a decorative planter, then hit a tree before stopping next to the Shady Canyon sign.
No other details were available regarding the cause of the accident, or the identity of the victims. We offer sincere condolences to the friends and family.

Ford Focus Overturns on I-5 In Orange County;Driver Crawls to Safety
posted:: Thursday June 2, 2011
A car crash that caused a vehicle to overturn on I-5 in Orange County occurred this morning, June 2, 2011, a little before 8:00 a.m. According to a California Highway Patrol officer at the scene, and as reported in the Orange County Register, three cars were involved in the accident, which happened near the Euclid Street Overpass in Anaheim.
A vehicle not identified in the news story hit the rear corner of a Ford Focus, and the impact forced the Focus into a Ford Edge. The Ford Focus then continued onto the right shoulder embankment and overturned. The driver of the overturned vehicle was able to crawl out uninjured.
The slow lane was blocked during the morning commute. No other details were available from the news story, but we assume the driver of the overturned vehicle was wearing a seatbelt. In an accident in which a car overturns or rolls over, a seat belt can keep you inside the vehicle compartment. This reduces your chances of serious injuries that can occur when victims, who are not wearing seatbelts, are ejected from vehicles as a result of these types of accidents.
We hope all who were involved in this accident seek the help they need.

Death of Teenage Cheerleader from Irvine
posted:: Thursday June 2, 2011
Yesterday, the man suspected of driving drunk and crashing into a car, killing a teenaged girl, was charged with murder. The accident, which occurred over the Memorial Day Weekend, caused irreversible brain damage in the fourteen-year-old cheerleader from Irvine who was traveling in the car, Ashton Sweet. In order for doctors to evaluate her organs for transplant donations, a breathing machine kept her alive from Sunday morning until Tuesday, when she was pronounced dead.
Three others girls were in the car with Sweet, as well as the father of one of the girls. He was driving them home from a birthday party early Sunday morning when Austin Farley, a 26-year-old man from Irvine, hit their car. According to the news story in the Los Angeles Times, prior to the accident, Farley was drinking in a bar. He had a blood alcohol level of .20%—twice the legal limit—when he ran a red light and struck the side of the car where Sweet had been sitting.
One of the other girls was also injured in the accident, and suffered a broken nose, a fractured rib, lacerated spleen and injuries to her lungs. According to the news story, the injured girl was unconscious as a result of the accident, and is still hospitalized with injuries that are not life threatening.
Prosecutors, according to the news story, said Farley took a cab to go home from the bar after late night drinking Saturday, but afterwards drove in his truck to get food with his girlfriend. He was southbound on Culver Drive heading toward Irvine Boulevard when he allegedly ran the red light and crashed into the other car.
Farley received felony charges for murder, and also driving under the influence causing injury with a sentence enhancement. The enhancement is for intentionally and personally inflicting and causing great bodily injury. Prosecutors said that Farley faces a maximum sentence, which could be 20 years to life in state prison.
We offer our condolences to all involved and affected by this tragic accident.

I-5 Crash Damages 3 Orange County Sheriff's Patrol Cars
A driver crashed into sheriff's patrol cars that were parked on the right shoulder and farthest right lane of the I-5 Freeway early Monday morning on April 25, 2011.
The crash, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., destroyed one patrol and damaged two others at a location a little north of the Lake Forest Drive exit in Orange County. The driver of the vehicle, a 65-year-old man, was not seriously injured.
The car he was driving hit one of the patrol cars, and the impact shoved the patrol car toward the other sheriff's cars parked ahead of it. The man's car careened across the lanes of the I-5 Freeway toward the center divider from the force of the impact.
The deputies were not in their vehicles at the time of the crash, and none of them were injured. They had been investigating a vandalism incident, and had pulled over a vehicle before the crash occurred.
The man driving the car that crashed had a cut lip, and he was taken to Mission Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. No arrest was made.
The accident caused the closure of at least three northbound lanes while the California Highway Patrol investigated.
We are glad that this accident, as reported, resulted in little bodily harm, with minor injuries to the driver, and none to the deputies. We hope the driver is seeks assistance related to this car accident.

Passenger car and big-rig collision stalls traffic in both directions on the 57 freeway in Fullerton.
At 5:25 a.m. Friday morning, a passenger vehicle and a big-rig collided on the 57 freeway, north of Yorba Linda Boulevard in Fullerton. As reported in the Orange County Register, when California Highway Patrol officer P. Gomez reached the scene to investigate the accident, a wrecked Nissan Altima was situated in the number 1 and 2 lanes, and the big-rig was on the right shoulder of the freeway. Gomez was told by a passenger of the Altima, who was taken to the hospital, that their vehicle had a flat tire and spun out before the collision with the big-rig. Gomez wasn't able to talk to the injured driver of the Altima, and he is continuing his investigation of the accident's cause.

AUTO INDUSTRY NEWS
California Company Rolling Out Electric Car
Based in Irvine, California, Fisker Automotive Inc. plans to deliver its electric car to European and American dealers by next month. The $88,000 car, called the Karma, is an electric plug-in, able to travel 50 miles on electricity only. After that, the gas engine kicks in. A company in Finland, that also builds cars for Porsche, is making the Karma on contract for Fisker.
A spokesperson for Fisker stated the company wants to build up slowly, to be sure of quality. This year, Fisker plans to deliver 7,000 cars. The company sees a growing market for cars that use little or no gasoline, which many consumers will no doubt find appealing as gas creeps toward $4.00 per gallon. The cars will also kick out fewer emissions, which should appeal to almost everyone who is concerned about the environment.
Other electric vehicles on the road include the $109,000 Roadster by Tesla Motors Inc., the Leaf hatchback by Nissan, and Volt by General Motors. Fisker has plans to develop other cars similar to its Karma, including a sedan priced at $39,000 that will be manufactured on U.S. soil, in a plant in Delaware that used to be owned by GM.
With fewer emissions from our driving trips, we can all breathe a little easier.

America's Interstates—One of Our Best Ideas Needs Help
Imagine trying to take a trip across the country. You're driving on a paved highway and then it turns into a dirt road before it ends altogether. Trying to get across the continent means you have to follow a mishmash of routes, some poorly marked, some not even on your map. Most of us take for granted that we have a great road system in the United States. But it wasn't always this way. Before Eisenhower became president and signed an act in 1956 that created the interstate highway system, he experienced spotty highways and poor roads as he traveled across the U.S. while serving in the military in the early part of the twentieth century. Decades later, while serving as Commander of the Allied Forces during World War II, he saw first-hand the well-engineered highway system in Germany. Motivated and influenced by these experiences, he believed America needed a top-notch road system to link the nation.
Understanding that a network of superior roads serves the collective good of the whole country, legislators in an earlier era voted to allocate federal dollars to create this Interstate System. The current Interstate System is over 46,000 miles long, with individual states owning and operating the segments in their jurisdictions.
Our contemporary lives would be impossible without America's roads and highways—among the best in the world. They transport everything we buy and use, and link other modes of transportation such as rail, marine shipping, and air transport. To work, or home, or vacation, America's roads and highways allow us to go wherever we want to go. They are spectacular achievements—and victims of their own success. Many of our routes are now so crowded, they exceed the capacity they were designed for. Extra congestion, impatience, and impaired driving lead to increased hazards and numbers of accidents. Carpool lanes, light rail, and streetcars are options adopted in some areas to reduce congestion on our roads. Designs are planned, and others already implemented to improve roads to handle higher vehicle capacities. In the meantime, caution, awareness, and patience can help everyone get down the road more safely.

Orange County's Historical Slow Roads Have Become Dangerous Commuter Routes
Mention the Ortega Highway in South County, and many people know it as one of the most dangerous highways to drive. Two winding lanes, one headed toward Lake Elsinore, the other toward San Juan Capistrano, the highway cutting through the wilderness of the Cleveland National Forest was not intended as a commuter route. Yet that's what it became. Narrow bridges make it a tight squeeze when two large vehicles—a semi and trailer—pass each other. Impatient drivers add to the risk by trying to pass another car with scant clearance. Tight curves taken at excessive speed have cost some drivers their lives, by colliding with other cars or tumbling down steep slopes.
With population continuing to increase in Orange County, drivers try to find alternate routes to the crammed freeways that have expanded the notion of "rush hour" to "rush morning" or "rush evening." Often these crowded travel times blend into one, long, busy traffic day. Other roads ranked high on most dangerous travel corridors in Orange County include Laguna Canyon Road and Jamboree Road. These routes, also, were built at a time when the population of Orange County was far less than it is today. The amount of traffic exceeds the capacity planned for these roads, which were originally back roads through rural and wilderness areas.
Jamboree Road, named for the Boy Scout Jamboree of 1953, was built to connect the tent city with the clubhouse for the encampment, located north of Pacific Coast Highway and between Jamboree and what is now MacArthur Boulevard in Newport Beach. The weeklong event—the first national Jamboree held west of the Mississippi River—brought 50,000 boy scouts and 1,000 leaders. Spectators, audiences, and entertainers added extra attendance numbers. Back then, the hazards in the vicinity of Jamboree Road were of a natural history element—scorpions, rattlesnakes, ticks, mites, and black widow spiders.
Troops from 48 states, all U.S. territories, and 17 countries attended the event, and put Orange County on the map. The vast encampment—that took three years to plan and develop—was torn down in five days. Today, Orange County's slow-paced, rural and wilderness history is mostly only remembered, and celebrated in events such as the Orange County Fair at the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
Contemporary life in Orange County means challenges that are reflected in increased hazards on our busy, congested roads, highways, and freeways, and car accidents that can occur with increasing statistical frequency. Increased accident frequency means your chances are greater that you will need a great accident attorney Orange County team.

The U.S. Supreme Court Admits Paul Lee to the Bar
Los Angeles, CA – As the highest bar in the land, the Supreme Court carries much history and honor for those who work to interpret our laws. AA-Accident Attorneys celebrates Paul Lee's acceptance for admission to the U.S. Supreme Court. Adding to the honor was the experience of a lifetime: Mr. Lee—within whispering distance of the Justices—was admitted in open court. Admission in this way, which occurs while the court is in session for oral arguments, is a rare occurrence, since court is only in session for oral arguments from 35 to 39 days each year. Being sworn in by all nine Justices is something that Mr. Lee will never forget. Less than one percent of all attorneys who are admitted to the bar each year do so before the Justices.
Mr. Lee and the other attorneys were instructed by General William K. Suter, Clerk of the Court, to raise their right hands and take the oath:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that as an attorney and a counselor of this Court, I will conduct myself uprightly and according to the law, and I will defend the Constitution of the United States.
Hearing Chief Justice Roberts grant the motion for admission to the Bar, Mr. Lee experienced an awe-inspiring moment. In the marble-columned courtroom, where so much history has been made, Mr. Lee joined a lineage of individuals who have striven to fight for legal rights. Landmark cases, such as Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade, were presented in the court of which Mr. Lee now is a member. After the swearing in, Mr. Lee, along with the other attorneys sworn in, was personally escorted by U.S. Marshals to a private reception.
Admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court means that Mr. Lee is now authorized to file motions before the Court and argue cases.
Mr. Lee sees this latest milestone as another avenue in which he can serve the community. He originally founded AA-Accident Attorneys as a local specialized personal injury law practice, and grew it into a firm of national prominence, skilled in all areas of civil and tort law. In addition to providing clients with expert legal services through AA-Accident Attorneys, Mr. Lee currently serves the local community as a Judge Pro Tempore for the Superior Court.
NEWPORT BEACH TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS
Violent Crash Kills Three People in Newport Beach
On a warm winter afternoon, three people died while traveling in their vehicles on Pacific Coast Highway. Two cars ended up lying on their side, and some people were trapped in their cars. At the center of the fatal accident was a young woman who was driving with excessive speed.
"This was an extremely violent accident," Newport Beach police Lt. Bill Hartford was quoted as saying in the January 15, 2011 story in the Orange County Register. "There was broken glass thrown from curb line to curb line."
Though the investigation is continuing, police know that Julie Allen—a 27-year-old graduate of Corona del Mar High School and Stanford University, and a champion athlete in track and field—was traveling with excessive speeds on Pacific Coast Highway when she swerved into oncoming traffic, hit other vehicles, and flipped in the air. Her car then hit several other vehicles and a motorcycle. She was killed instantly, as were Christopher De La Cruz, 49, of Laguna Niguel, and Linda Burnett, 69, of Santa Ana. Others involved in the accident had non-fatal injuries.
An autopsy was recently performed on Allen, which is standard procedure for a fatal accident of this kind. It will take a couple of weeks until results are in.
While it is not yet clear why Allen was speeding, the end result is a tragedy for her, her family, and the two others who died, as well as their grieving families. We offer condolences to all who knew the deceased individuals.

SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY AUTO ACCIDENTS
Man in Speeding Car Plunges into Pond in Vista
A sixty-five-year-old man who was speeding in his car crashed into a pond on Shadowridge Drive near Antigua Drive in Vista. Witnesses say the driver must have been traveling 80 miles per hour when he lost control, hit another car, struck a curb, and then plunged off the road. One witness reported she saw him coming down the road in the wrong direction and swerved to miss him. The driver was headed west in the eastbound lanes. Other witnesses reported that the speeding driver caught so much air, he flew over the trees and dropped into the pond where people were fishing. Fishers then saw an arm reach through the sun roof, and the driver pulled himself up through the top of his submerged car.
Hazmat workers arrived on scene because rescue workers were unsure of the conditions of the water in the pond. Water samples were taken to test for bacteria levels and other contamination. Rescue workers reported they were concerned about possible head trauma for the driver, and hypothermia. They used a flotation system to secure the driver before pulling him to safety.
Details are not yet known as to whether the driver suffered a medical situation prior to his accident. Rescue workers said he seemed disoriented, but he was able to warn them that rifles in his car—which was towed for evidence—would need to be secured. We offer our best wishes to those involved in this accident.
