Amtrak Train and Truck Collide near Reno, Nevada Killing at Least Four People
posted:: Saturday June 25, 2011
Four people, and possibly more, were killed Friday morning, June 24, 2011, roughly 70 miles east of Reno, Nevada when an Amtrak train and a truck collided at a railroad crossing on U.S. Highway 95.
Another 70 people were injured in the Amtrak train accident that occurred around 11:25 a.m., and at least two of them are in critical condition, according to reports from various news outlets. A Nevada State trooper stated the driver of the truck died in the crash, and other reports state the conductor of the train also died.
The train has significant damage, and rescue personnel are examining the wreckage to locate and account for everyone. Other injured people have already been taken to area hospitals to be treated.
According to the spokesman for Amtrak, Marc Magliari, the California Zephyr that was traveling from Chicago to Emeryville, California had 204 passengers on board and 14 crewmembers.
One of the passengers, Jim Bickley, stated to news reporters that the semi struck the train’s fourth car, and two of the train’s cars caught fire. Other reports state the truck was a side-dump gravel transport truck.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board will examine the scene, at look into details such as the driving and medical records of the truck driver, as well as look at autopsy reports to see if drugs were involved. They will also determine if the railroad lights and crossing gates were operating properly.
This is a huge tragedy, and we offer our sincere condolences to everyone affected by this accident.

WOMAN AND TWO CHILDREN INJURED IN 4-VEHICLE CRASH ON I-5
posted:: Monday May 16, 2011
It’s a somber start to the week for the people involved in a four-vehicle crash today on I-5 in Santa Ana. The crash happened around 1:20 p.m. on May 16, 2011, and injured a woman and two children.
Three cars—a 1968 Jaguar, a Honda Civic, and a Toyota Yaris—and a big-rig collided on the northbound side of the freeway a little north of North Main Street. As reported in the Orange County Register, CHP officer Alvin Yamaguchi explained that the right-rear wheel may have been severed from the Jaguar in the accident, and this could be the first cause of the chain-reaction that involved the other vehicles. The accident blocked four lanes of traffic.
According to Officer Yamaguchi, the young children and the driver of the Yaris were transported to a UCI Medical Center in nearby City of Orange.
We hold everyone involved in this accident in our thoughts. Any accident can be traumatic, and those that occur at freeway speeds can be especially frightening. We hope for the best outcome for all.

ONE BICYCLIST DEAD, THREE OTHERS INJURED
BY SUSPECTED DRUNK DRIVER IN VENTURA COUNTY
posted:: Monday May 16, 2011
One driver, who is suspected to have been drunk, caused three accidents that killed a bicyclist and injured five other people, according to Ventura police. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, police arrested 49-year-old Satnam Singh for felony hit-and-run and gross vehicular manslaughter for the three accidents he caused and fled on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. The incidents happened one after the other around 6:50 p.m. when Singh was driving his Hummer. According to authorities, he was heading westbound on Telegraph Road near La Jolla Street where he hit a woman and her 13-year-old daughter who were riding bicycles, causing broken bones and numerous injuries.
Singh did not stop for the victims, and farther ahead on Telegraph Road at Petit Avenue, he caused the next collision, striking a pickup truck. Cameras captured the damage to pickup, which was considerable. Inside the pickup—its back end smashed—a sixteen-year-old boy and his parents suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Hummer continued on Telegraph and hit a cyclist near Mara Avenue. The 20-year-old, who was a college student, died at the accident site. Another cyclist was riding with the victim in a wide bike lane.
The hit-and-run driver continued to his nearby home and rolled into the driveway where a witness followed him. When police arrived, they reported Singh would not cooperate with them. He would not get out of this car, and also could not open the driver’s side door because of the damage caused to it from the impacts.
A police dog distracted Singh while police opened the rear hatch to enter. The driver went to the hospital where his minor injuries were treated. According to the news story, people interviewed by KTLA-TV Channel 5 said the student who died—a local high school graduate—was riding the bike to Ventura College to take a final exam.
To all the injured and the survivors, our thoughts for healing, and condolences for the bereaved. It goes without saying: don’t drive drunk. And never, ever, leave the scene of an accident.

Pay to Ride Alone in a Car Pool Lane in L.A.?
Driving on crowded freeways is no one’s idea of fun, and sometimes, watching cars whiz by in the car-pool lane can add to the frustration. Well, commuters are about to receive an option when they’re traveling on the super-crowded I-10 and I-110 Freeways in Los Angeles County. On a 14-mile stretch of I-10, between Alameda Street and the I-605, also on an 11-mile stretch of the I-110, between Adams Boulevard and the Artesia Transit Center, commuters can drive these sections alone, and pay a toll for doing so. Through a one-year pilot project, these portions of the two freeways are going to be converted into high-occupancy toll lanes, as called HOT lanes.
Scheduled for completion in 2012, hot lanes will give drivers who are traveling alone the chance to use lanes that currently only multi-occupant vehicles use. Solo drivers will pay from 25 cents to $1.40 per mile, depending on traffic conditions, to use the car-pool lane. Vehicles that currently can use the car-pool lane, such as motorcycles, buses, vanpools, and carpools, will not have to pay the toll. And just as they are now, drivers in the regular lanes will not be charged the toll.
As reported in the Orange County Register, according to Rick Jaeger, who is with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, funding for the construction project came from a $210 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Work will begin this summer. No similar plan is in the works for Orange County freeways, although the I-405 Improvement Project includes the possibility of additional toll lanes between the I-605 and 73 freeways.
Easing congestion will help everyone get down the road a little bit easier, and hopefully reduce accidents.

Does a Cancer-Causing Chemical in Drinking Water
Make You Want to Gag or Gulp?
This month major news organizations carried an alarming story: The drinking water in 31 cities in the U.S. contains hexavalent chromium. The hazards of this industrial, and cancer-causing, chemical gained widespread public attention through the movie “Erin Brockovich.” Though Pacific Gas & Electric paid $333 million to settle claims of more than 600 people from the town of Hinkley, California who were exposed to the chemical in their drinking water, a decade and a half later the issue of health risks from exposure to hexavalent chromium appears more widespread.
A national survey by the Environmental Working Group found concentrations of hexavalent chromium in drinking water were highest in Norman, Oklahoma, Honolulu, Hawai’i, and Riverside, California. 35 cities in the survey had three times as much hexavalent chromium in drinking water as the ideal standard, or public health goal, that is being considered by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.
The survey by the Environmental Working Group reveals the problem of contaminated drinking water may be found in more locales than originally thought. While the concentration levels of hexavalent chromium found in drinking water may be lower in some places, health problems can come from chronic exposure.
Hexavalent chromium was a widely used industrial chemical, but groundwater contamination can also come from natural sources such as leaching from ores. The Environmental Protection Agency currently does not have a limit set for hexavalent chromium in drinking water. Though a limit would help protect public health, there is resistance from some water utilities across the U.S. Cleaning up hexavalent chromium will be expensive, but at the end of the day—and at the bottom of that next glass of water—is the health of real people. Limits set for this cancer-causing chemical will make it safer to drink up.
