We routinely pay referral fees to other lawyers in accordance with The Rules of Professional Conduct of the State Bar of California. The Rules prohibit referral fees paid to non-lawyers. The Rules also allow us to co-counsel a case with other lawyers and pay appropriate referral fees to those lawyers. The client's prior consent is required. We regularly seek out qualified lawyers in other states for co-counsel on our out of cases. We find that co-counseling with local lawyers on our out-of-state cases provides our clients with expertise of the local environment, local contacts and reduced travel costs.
