Glyburide is an oral medication used to reduce blood glucose levels. Common side effects are hypoglycemia, jaundice, hepatitis, allergic skin reactions, low white counts, hyponatremia, blurred vision.
Glyburide is a second-generation sulfonylurea or oral hypoglycemic agent (OHA), a synthetic agent used to lower the blood sugar level. First introduced in 1970, this drug is 200 times more effective than its first-generation OHA predecessor tolbutamide in treating diabetic patients. This drug is commonly prescribed by physicians for the treatment of mild to moderate cases of Type II diabetes, a metabolic disorder also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
Glyburide is currently used in cases the diabetes is not severe enough to require insulin treatment but at the same time cannot be controlled through dietary changes alone. This drug is available in under both generic and brand name labels.
Possible side effects - hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels).
Rare adverse effects - skin rash, hives, itching, drug-induced fever, headache, ringing in the ears, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, liver damage, nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting at night), anemia (lack of oxygen to the tissues), jaundice (yellow skin), increased risk of heart failure.
Care must be taken to control the levels of insulin in the body. Too much or too little may cause fatal complications. Patients with diabetes should always carry identification indicating their condition, be knowledgeable of the symptoms for adverse effects, and have a readily available source of sugar to eat to counterbalance the insulin levels in side the body.
